In 1995 our current CEO, Wayne Pitout, and Avi
Azulai, founded a company, now called iTouch South Africa that began an
SMS service in the region.
In 1996 iTouch South Africa began developing and operating value-added
mobile services with Vodacom securing an agreement in April 1997 to
develop services exclusively for the carrier.
iTouch South Africa started services with Independent News &
Media in South Africa, taking a 70% equity stake in the business by
1998.
iTouch plc was incorporated in January 2000 in England and Wales as the
holding company for three operating companies - South Africa, Ireland
and the United Kingdom.
During the first half of 2000, iTouch plc also incorporated iTouch New
Zealand and iTouch Australia, and created a 50:50 joint venture in
Israel.
iTouch floated on the London Stock Exchange in August 2000 at a price
of 70p per share, raising £42.5m (net).
In 2001, iTouch plc acquired 75% of Telequity, one of the top five
corporate IVR providers in Australia, purchasing the remaining 25% in
June 2002. Later in 2001, iTouch acquired certain assets and brands of
the Interactive Media and Content division of Thus plc.
iTouch plc acquired the business of Telescope UK Ltd in August 2002 and
also bought m4 Group Limited, a UK based Mobile Data business in
November of the same year.
In June 2003 iTouch announced the acquisition of Movilisto SA, Spain's
leading provider of Premium SMS services. The acquisition was approved
by the company at an EGM on June 2 2003.
In December 2003, the Group raised £4.0m before expenses
through a placing for cash of 14,545,454 new ordinary shares of 1p
each.
A content agreement and €8.0m funding by Japanese partner
For-Side took place in August 2004.
iTouch acquired Jippii Mobile Entertainment, a pan-European provider of
mobile entertainment services, in September 2004 for €12m
cash.
In May 2005, the Group was acquired by the Japanese listed For-side.com
for £179.6m.
Since the acquisition by For-side iTouch acquired sms.at, Austria's
leadind youth portal and expanded its presence in Latin America with
two acquisitions, one in Mexico and the other in Brazil (mFun). Whilst
part of the For-side group, iTouch has integrated a number of other
businesses into its operations. They include:
- Akumiitti, a Finnish based company providing a broad selection of
mobile entertainment services and content for Orange in the UK and
Meteor in Ireland
- Mobivillage, based in France, provides a mobile music portal,
including full track downloads, ringtones and images, for SFR
(Vodafone) in France, Proximus in Belgium and Vodafone Czechoslovakia
as well as a web and WAP games portal for Orange in France and Mobistar
(Orange) in Belgium
- Telitas, based in Norway provides interactive TV services for SBS
across the Benelux and Scandinavian territories
In March 2007, the founders of iTouch and Movilisto completed a
management buyout of the Company from For-side of Japan. The financing
syndicate was led by US-based Oak Investment Partners who have a track
record of success in the interactive media, infrastructure and mobile
internet sectors.
In July 2007, Buongiorno acquired 100% of
iTouch. With the acquisition of iTouch,
Buongiorno has become the world’s No. 1
provider of mobile
entertainment, with 38 offices conducting
business in 53 countries, direct connections to
more than 100
telecoms carriers throughout the world, and with
access to over 2 billion mobile users. It also
ranks
among the top three mobile entertainment
companies in 8 of its largest markets.
